My tool Box

This is a big topic...one I look forward to getting into words! Probably gonna take me a little while tho...do come back!

Here I plan to share with you my favourite tools of the trade, the theories and pscyhotherapeutic approaches that have resonnated with me and make the most sense to me; those I 'use' to illustrate, translate, and explain what maybe happening for you and me, where our 'stuff' may come from, and what maybe helpful to do about it, if appropriate.

It's my aim to give you a basic understanding of a few core theories that you can use to assist your self awareness. They can become tools you can use to help make sense of experiences you are having or have had.

I appreciate we are all different and what makes sense to me, especially since I am a very visual thinker, may not be your preference. Luckily there are countless philosophies in Psychotherapy to choose from, so you can take your pick.

As integrative therapists, we believe there merit in all of these theories, no one approach has all the answers...together they form a more cohesive explanation of what it is to be human. The more we understand, the more we are able to control, if not externally, then within ourselves.

As we go along these saying will make more senese. There is a language therpists use that we can take for granted everyone understands which you probably don't!  In fact, a lot of what therapists say is just jargon and therapy speak. I know it used to drive me crazy when I would be told to 'trust the process', what? I'm actually much more practical and my approach to getting where I need to be is less about acceptance and trust and more about understanding and choices and you know what, it's all OK, there is no one right way, just which way feels right for YOU!

Rmember therapy SHOULD be all about YOU, not your therapist's idea of what's interesting, or what they may think is best for you!

If you hand over your power to an 'expert' you will always be under their control. Try to see them as people, like anyone else, just with skills and knowledge that you can learn from...they don't have all the answers and they shouldn't be telling you what to do!

It's a doctors job to fix people...ours is to be your companion....a sorta friend with skills. A mirror as we would say.. and this I'll explain too! A positive, unconditionally accepting, caring mirror. A mirror in which you see your best self...a self you need to be reconcilled to if you are to live together harmoniously. No worries it this isn't making much sense...I will explain I promise.

Think of aquiring this new skill set as being like tools....I think of it like digging the garden...you want to dig it so you can plant your flowers but you only have a spoon and it's very hard going....how much easier would it be if someone gave you a shovel and a fork...they aren't offering to digg your ground for you....you have to do that for yourself, but it will be a whole lot easier with the tools than without! Agreed?!

My favourite ways of looking and describing pschological processes - Frames of reference, keys, guides for interpreting and understanding ourselves.

Jungian Transpersonal Psychology - the language of Archetypes -  Individuation and self actualisation, knowing our many selves - because I'm very visual I love this approach to relating. I find it very empowering and universally understood.

Transpersonal - Spiritual awareness. .

Transactional Analysis - Model of self, helps to understand relational dynamics between people.

Psychoanalytic Transference - understanding how we play our past out in the present.

Relational Therapy - the true healer, person to person.

Art Therapy - when there simply aren't words

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - for managing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, when 'doing'  something might be helpful.

Existensialism  - keeping it real and in the moment.

gestalt -  for challenging white elephants.

Somatic awareness - paying attention to our bodies own intelligence, our felt sense.

Person Centred -  For times you need to just be heard.

Solution focused/Brief Therapy - For when a practical, lets change it approach is helpful.

All of these approaches are integrated within me in a natural cohesive way....it's not eclectic, I don't just randomly grab at different bits, it all just flows. I hope that makes some sense.
